Dr James O’Callaghan is a Specialist Pain Medicine Physician in full time practice in southeast Queensland. Dr. O’Callaghan trained in Australia and holds specialist qualification in both Anaesthesia and Pain Medicine.
Dr. O’Callaghan was one of the founding members of the Faculty of Pain Medicine which is a body associated with the Australian and New Zealand College of Anaesthetists, and responsible for the training of new Pain Specialists and their maintenance of professional standards.
Dr. O’Callaghan was recently awarded the “Distinguished Member Award” by The Australian Pain Society, for “services to the promotion, treatment and science of pain management and lifelong contribution to the Australian Pain Society”.
Dr. O’Callaghan pioneered Interventional Techniques for pain management in Queensland, and has been performing treatments such as Radiofrequency Neurotomy and Spinal Cord Stimulation in appropriate patients since the late 1980’s.
Dr O’Callaghan has a number of specific interests in Pain Medicine. His aim is to identify the cause of someone’s persisting pain, and then determine the best way to treat it, using a variety of modalities such as appropriate drug therapy, any nerve blocks which might help, occasional implant techniques such as spinal cord stimulation, and assistance with referral onto education and exercise programs when required.
