Dr Jonathan Curtis is Director of Neurosurgical Services at Northern Beaches Hospital and has overseen the notable growth of the department since its inception in 2018, which now services many regional and interstate patients alongside those from the Beaches. He specialises in all aspects of general adult neurosurgery, including minimally invasive spine surgery for nerve pain, complex fusion surgery for back or neck pain, cranial microsurgery for brain tumours and the “clipping” of aneurysms, endovascular “coiling” of aneurysms, trauma surgery and the management of CSF disorders.
Jonathan graduated from the University of Sydney in 1996 obtaining his Australian credentials in Neurosurgery in 2004. He was then selected for an advanced two-year International Fellowship at the Swedish Neuroscience Institute in Seattle, USA, where he subspecialised in endovascular, open cerebrovascular, complex spine, and skull base neurosurgical techniques.
Jonathan has dual training in conventional neurosurgery and newer minimally invasive surgical techniques. He’s well experienced in the use of 3D neuro-navigation guidance technology, computerassisted surgery, and robotics in the treatment of brain tumours and complex spinal fusion surgery. He’s also one of only a limited number of neurosurgeons worldwide with advanced sub-specialized training in both the microsurgical and endovascular treatment of cerebrovascular abnormalities, and the ability to perform his own high-resolution 3D cerebral angiograms.
