Dr. Burgess currently practices respiratory and sleep medicine within The Peninsula Respiratory Group on Sydney’s northern beaches, and until July 2018, intensive care medicine at Manly Public Hospital. His ongoing research interests are in the control of breathing during sleep. He graduated MBBS from the University of Sydney in 1975. Subsequently, FRACP in 1981 specialising in Respiratory Medicine. He then undertook a research fellowship in Canada culminating in a MSc. in Physiology, before joining the medical faculty of the University of Calgary as an Assistant Professor. He obtained his FRCPC in both Internal Medicine and Respiratory Diseases (including Critical Care) in 1984.
In 1990 he studied polysomnography with Prof. John Remmers and Prof. Bill Whitelaw. He then set up a 2 bed sleep laboratory in 1993 which has grown into a 5 bed laboratory at Frenchs Forest, in Sydney. He has taught medical students for the University of Sydney since 1993, and served as sub-dean Manly & Mona Vale Hospitals for several years. He has been a Clinical Associate Professor from 2002 and then Clinical Professor for the University of Sydney from 2016 to 2020.
