Thoracic Surgery

Phillip is a specialist Thoracic Surgeon and the Head of Thoracic Surgery & Lung Cancer Service at the Royal Melbourne Hospital. His main clinical appointment is at The Royal Melbourne Hospital and at the Peter MacCallum Cancer Centre as part of the Victorian Comprehensive Cancer Centre. Exposed to a large variety of benign and malignant diseases of the chest, his work includes all aspects of adult thoracic surgery including care of patients with malignancies of the chest and trauma surgery. He is also committed to research and teaching, as well as having an active role in the Trauma Unit at RMH.
Phillip is a native Melbournian and studied Medicine and Music at the University of Melbourne. The majority of his surgical training was undertaken at The Royal Melbourne Hospital with a Fellowship year in Cardiac and General Thoracic Surgery at The University of Virginia, Charlottesville Virginia USA. Upon his return in 2000, Phillip has consolidated the Multi-Disciplinary Clinic at the Royal Melbourne Hospital into a busy and comprehensive clinical and research service. He is the Director of the Lung Tumour Stream at RMH and has a strong interest in multidisciplinary cancer care. Phillip is heavily involved in the development of The Victorian Comprehensive Cancer Centre at the Parkville Campus.

Phillip is an active musician and viola player, and runs the highly acclaimed doctor’s orchestra in Melbourne called Corpus Medicorum and raises funds through the Royal Melbourne Hospital Foundation for Lung Cancer Research.

Expertise

  • All aspects of thoracic surgery from advanced bronchoscopy with laser and stenting to advanced pulmonary resections including VATS lobectomy.
  • Chest wall trauma, resection and reconstruction, as well as pectus deformity corrective surgery including the Nuss procedure. 
  • Senior Lecturer in the Department of Surgery at the University of Melbourne.
  • Active teaching role of medical students, residents and nursing staff as well as specialist trainees in Cardiothoracic Surgery.
  • Runs a Thoracic Fellowship program for training senior registrars in advanced Thoracic Surgical Oncology.
  • Preceptor for industry in training other Thoracic Surgeons in minimally invasive thoracic surgery including VATS lobectomy.

Interests

  • Medical informatics, and developing systems including electronic patient records and audit and research databases
  • Major research interests include pulmonary metastasectomy and traumatic rib osteosynthesis.
