Neurosurgery

Dr Tanya Yuen initially completed a Dental degree from the University of Melbourne and went on to pursue Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery training in the United Kingdom, where she also obtained a Fellowship in Dental Surgery at the Royal College of Surgeons of London. On her return to Australia, Tanya changed careers, obtaining her Medical degree from the University of Melbourne and completing Neurosurgery training in 2012. During this time she also completed a PhD in “Tumour Associated Epilepsy” through the University of Melbourne. Through her training she won of a number of prestigious scholarships including the Melville Hughes Surgical Trainee Scholarship, NHMRC Medical Training Scholarship, John Lowenthal Surgical Trainee Scholarship and the Pfizer Neuroscience Research Scholarship. An author of a number of publications in peer reviewed journals and neurosurgery textbooks, Tanya is also co-convenor of the prestigious Australian neurosurgical meeting, “Controversies in Neurosurgery”. She is also a regular reviewer for the official journal of the Neurosurgical Society of Australasia, the Journal of Clinical Neuroscience. 

Tanya holds Consultant appointments at the Melbourne Private, Royal Melbourne and Western General Hospitals and is committed to providing excellent care for her patients throughout their treatment, striving to attain not only excellent surgical outcomes, but also complete patient satisfaction.

Expertise

Passionate about education and mentorship of medical students, Tanya holds the roles and positions of:

  • Academic Supervisor for Medical Students for the Department of Neurosurgery at the Royal Melbourne Hospital
  • Senior Lecturer in the Department of Surgery and an Examiner for the Faculty of Medicine, Dentistry and Health Sciences at the University of Melbourne
  • A Fellow of the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons
  • Active member of the Neurosurgical Society of Australasia and the Australian Medical Association
  • Committee member of the Women In Surgery Section within the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons
