Professor Muralidharan (Murali) is a highly experienced and accomplished General, Upper GI and Hepatopancreatobiliary surgeon.
Murali is fluent in Tamil.
A/Prof. Muralidharan is a clinical and academic HPB
surgeon. He graduated with Honours from Monash
University in 1991 and completed General Surgery training at the Alfred Hospital (FRACS) in 2000. Between 1999 and 2001 he enrolled in full time research at Monash University supported by the Surgeon Scientist Scholarship of the RACS and completed a doctorate in philosophy by thesis (PhD) on the treatment of colorectal liver metastases. He was awarded the prestigious Paul McMaster Scholarship for two consecutive years to undertake specialised training in hepatobiliary & pancreatic surgery and liver transplantation from 2002 to 2004 at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital, Birmingham, UK.
A/Prof. Muralidharan is currently appointed as Consultant Surgeon, HPB + Transplant Unit and Senior Lecturer in the University of the Melbourne Department of Surgery, Austin Health. He has an active clinical and academic surgical career involving clinical and basic science research leading to more than 40 peer reviewed publications and three book chapters in his specialty of HPB surgery.
A/Prof Muralidharan is extensively involved in surgical
education having completed a Masters in Surgical
Education in 2015. He is the supervisor of General Surgical training at Austin Hospital. He was previous chair of the Vic/ Tas training committee and is the current deputy chair of the Board in General Surgery. He remains actively involved in curriculum redesign and educational research.
A/Prof. Muralidharan’s surgical practice includes a wide
range of general abdominal surgery with a special interest
in minimally invasive surgery for gallbladder diseases and
abdominal wall hernia repair. His special interests are in
surgery of the liver, pancreas, gallbladder and biliary tree,
in particular the multi-modality treatments for liver and pancreatic tumours with a strong emphasis on evidencebased surgery.
